Salt Lake County Adaptive Recreation partners with Utah Swords Academy to teach these children proper fencing skills.

Salt Lake City — (KUTV) In an effort to empower children with disabilities, the Salt Lake County Adaptive Recreation Department hosted a week-long adaptive sports camp.
"It’s amazing to see their self-esteem grow from day one to day two and to see the friendships that they form,” said Susie Schroer Salt Lake County Adaptive Recreation Coordinator. "We all have struggles and insecurities, but these children are teaching us to be strong; that what is inside of you is stronger than whatever may be in your way.”

About Wheelchair Fencing.

Wheelchair fencing is one of two Paralympic combat sports. Wheelchair Fencing is open to men and women with locomotive disabilities.
The modern sport of Wheelchair Fencing is a blend of mental agility, speed and tactics and part of the Paralympic program since the first Games at Rome 1960 and currently is practiced in 34 countries.

Wheelchair Fencing is a fantastic sport for disabled athletes and thanks to the London 2012 Paralympics it is being discovered by more and more wheelchair users.
Our aim is to demonstrate what wheelchair fencing is all about by giving you an introduction to the rules, equipment and details of how you can get started with wheelchair fencing.
"Wheelchair Fencing is a really fast sport, you don’t have a chance to stop. You always have to be alert and it's highly competitive."

Feedback from New Students

The experience was amazing. My son had a great time. The instruction was great. I highly recommend it.

My son really enjoyed this experience. Konstantine and Jack were great instructors! Strict enough to get stuff done, but relaxed enough to have fun. Konstantine was very respectful to the two girls in the class as well (ie. letting them go first, but not taking it easier on them then on the boys). Great job!

OMG! It was so much fun! I will be joining after the first of the year. I can't wait!
